DLL Editor's note -- I apologize to readers who may be offended by the "rough" language in this video (below), but I fully endorse the speaker's forceful observations ...  Roy L. Beasley, DLL Editor

When Trump won the GOP nomination with over 13 million votes, I was very concerned, like millions of other liberals. How many votes might he receive in the November elections? Twice as many, three times, four times? Four times would be more than 50 million votes, possibly enough to win the election which the best pollsters unanimously declared would be highly improbable. So my worst case was about 40 million.

Forty million Americans might vote for a man I regarded as the most unqualified candidate I had seen in my long lifetime. Hillary would win, but these "deplorables" -- as she called Trump's supporters in what I regarded as a shocking and deeply offensive display of arrogance, bigotry, and political ineptitude -- were likely to make her presidency one of the most troubled in our nation’s history and one of the least successful. Nevertheless, she would still be better than Trump.

But when I expressed my concerns to fellow liberals in my small circles of family, friends, and colleagues. I was stunned by the hostility that I encountered from the “true believers” who really thought that most of Trump’s supporters were “deplorable” racist, sexist, gay bashing, immigrant hating, Islamophobic, fascist, etc, etc, etc. A few stopped speaking to me. It did not matter to them that millions of Trump's supporters had also voted for the first African American president not once, but twice.

So when Trump won, I was wrong, but they were “wronger”. No matter, because neither they nor I nor Hillary herself ever made any significant effort to engage Trump's supporters to try to understand why they supported him, then try to persuade them that Hillary might better serve their needs. Now we all have to live with the consequences of our political stupidity.
