DLL Storify of Open House at Civic Hall, NYC -- Tuesday 1/20/15

Last update: Tuesday 1/21/15 @ 3:25 pm
Personal Democracy Media announced the Civic Hall project in November 2014:
"In short, what people told us was they want a home base, a gathering place that provides a physical space that is more intensive than a weekend hackathon, but less structured than a start-up incubator."

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Fortunately for the rest of us, Dr. King was not just a man of great wisdom, but a man whose mastery of the written and spoken word enabled him to share his wisdom in a manner that made his sharing one of the unforgettable experiences of our lives. So on this day that we celebrate his birth, perhaps the best tribute we can render is to listen to some of what he said and read some of what he wrote, yet again ... Black America Needs More Oaklands

Revised: Thursday 2/11/16
From time to time during the last few decades governors, mayors, and corporate nabobs all over the country have launched initiatives that were supposed to develop local versions of Silicon Valley. So far the results have been disappointing. A few months ago (in late 2014) a group of black community leaders in New York City launched a promising initiative called "Silicon Harlem." Although I'm greatly impressed by the array of talent that has lined up to support this program, I'm discouraged by the explicit reference to Silicon Valley as a model. To my way of thinking, Oakland California provides a far more promising template for America's Black Communities.

Police Violence and Accountability

Last update: Wednesday 1/7/15 @ 7:32 pm
DLL Editor's Note -- Below find a group of tweets that were posted in the "Views" section of the 12/6/14 edition of "HBCU Tech" magazine. The tweets provide links to informative articles about police violence against unarmed black males and their lack of accountability for the injuries and deaths inflicted on their victims.  I am publishing these notes again in a separate post in order to make them more accessible to the readers of this blog. From time to time I will add additional tweets that link to other references of comparable quality.
