Confessions of an online course completer

Last update: Saturday 7/21/18

I am an online course (a/k/a MOOC) completer, one of the nerdy five percent. Better still, I am also a compulsive completer of multi-course certificate programs, one of the super nerdy one percent; but I wasn't always this way.

No TECH Updates or TECH Dozens magazine until August 2018

DLL Editor's note -- Summertime is usually slow news for colleges and universities, providers of #EdTech, info tech companies, hackers, and #DiversityInTech activists, but this summer seems to be a bit slower than usual. Therefore the DLL will suspend publication of its midweek "Tech Update" and its weekend "TECH Dozens" magazine until August. I apologize for any inconvenience this suspension will cause for any of our readers.

Affirmative action at America's top tier private colleges and universities

Last update: Thursday 7/5/18
The advocates for Asian applicants who are currently challenging Harvard University's admissions policies would surely concede that all of the freshmen admitted in a particular year to a top tier university should be Ethiopian or Polish or Peloponnesian Greek if Ethiopians, Poles, or Peloponnesian Greeks were the most qualified applicants that year.

No more "MOOCs"

Last update: Thursday 6/21/18
"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet ..."

With all due respect to the Bard, what something is called sometimes matters a great deal. I suggest that the word "MOOC" had a clear meaning back in 2011 when it was an acronym for a "massive, open, online course" ... but not anymore.

#EdTechBiz -- Microsoft should acquire DataCamp

Last update: Wednesday 6/6/28
Now that Microsoft has gobbled up GitHub, who's next? In a recent op-ed published on Inside Higher Ed, Joshua Kim suggested that Microsoft should acquire Coursera. While I can understand why an academic would make such a recommendation, I don't think Coursera lies within Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's laser focus on the cloud and artificial intelligence (AI).

Applying data science to Black achievements in higher ed

Last update: Thursday 31 May 2018
From time to time the denial of the achievements of Black Americans in higher education becomes so pervasive as to almost make me believe in "conspiracies." Given my personal history, I am particularly concerned by the recent "conspiracy" that denies the existence of hundreds of thousands of Black Americans like me who obtained higher ed degrees in STEM fields because the "pipelines" that would have enabled our existence haven't been created yet, according to the "conspirators". This kind of racist nonsense isn't new, but its persistence in a world wherein the most arcane facts are accessible to anyone who has access to the Internet is baffling. Herbert A. Simon, one of the great pioneers of our Information Age, anticipated the roots of this paradox.

Invisible is the new black

Last update: Tuesday 3/27/18
This morning's online edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education contained an article titled, "They Wanted Desegregation. They Settled for Money, and It’s About to Run Out." I suggest that this excellent article is a "must-read" for anyone concerned about the condition of Black students in U.S. higher education. I mean the 300,000 Black students who attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) ... AND ... the invisible 2.7 million Black students who attend non-HBCUs.

Higher ed's grudge against MOOCs -- Part 3

Last update: Saturday 3/24/18
This third post concludes the discussion I began in Part 1 and continued in Part 2. It summarizes the ten online degrees offered by Coursera's partners. Then it offers a plausible scenario wherein the courses in Coursera's online degree programs could contribute to the disruption of the lion's share American higher ed that still needs to be disrupted for the benefit of most American students.

Higher ed's grudge against MOOCs -- Part 2

Last update: Tuesday 3/20/18
Part 1 of this note registered my strong disagreement with a recent editorial about Coursera's pivot from non-credit certificate programs to fully accredited degree programs. Coursera's certificate courses were MOOCs because they were inexpensive, whereas the courses in its degree programs entail tuition and fees comparable to the tuition and fees charged by conventional online degree programs. Therefore I say its degree courses are not MOOCs.
