Blacker than thou

Last update: Friday 4/24/15
When I joined the faculty of Howard University in Washington, DC way back in the 1972 Fall semester, I was not just coming to Howard; I was also fleeing from Harvard. I was in flight because I knew that if I stayed in Cambridge for another year, I might have some kind of a breakdown.

Disrupt SVTV!!! ... final (??) thoughts

Amended: Saturday 5/16/15
HBO renewed its hit TV show "Silicon Valley" for a third season, right after the first episode of its second season was aired two weeks ago. I liked most of the episodes of its first season last year, despite that fact that all of its main characters were stereotypical Asian and Caucasian nerds and/or slobs. I prefer shows that cast Black actors in leading or supporting roles, e.g., all flavors of "Law & Order,"  "NCIS, and "Star Trek" reruns. And I still think that the "Cosby Show" and "The Wire" were two of the best television shows ever produced.

Disrupt Hackathons!!!

Last update: Friday 4/10/15
This article is a substantial revision of my first note about hackathons  (November, 2014). The revision was triggered by (a) my increased awareness that employers are using hackathons as fertile on-site recruiting grounds for new employees, (b) my growing dissatisfaction as a remote "fan" of hackathons with the tweets of hackathon on-site observers, the selective summaries of hackathons subsequently produced by hackathon sponsors, and the limited effectiveness of Storify, Eventify, and other event curation tools, e.g, the DLL's Archives, and, finally (c) the creation of multiple live hackathon streaming channels on Twitch by Major League Hacking (@MLHacks).

DLL Storify of HBCU ICE Hackathon -- Tech for Empowerment ... Thursday 4/9/15, Day #2 of 2

Last update: Friday 4/10/15 @ 8:17 am
The HBCU Innovation, Commercialization and Entrepreneurship Platform Initiative (or ICE) is a joint venture and collaboration between the UNCF, Association for Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), and the White House HBCU Initiative.  ICE represents over 25 historically black colleges and universities – public and private – and engages administrative leadership, faculty and most importantly, students on our campuses.

Digital and social media have proven to be powerful platforms that can drive social change and empower individuals to become agents of change within their own communities.  To address this opportunity, the HBCU ICE initiative launched the ICE Hackathon Series as a vehicle to engage African-American students on our campuses and youth in our communities. The "Tech for Empowerment" hackathon in Atlanta was facilitated by Qeyno Labs, the leading provider of youth hackathons for inclusive innovation.

Below find the DLL Storify of tweets that were generated by participants on Day #2 of the hackathon that used hashtag = #ICEHACK. The DLL Storify for Day #1 will be found HERE

As usual, the DLL Storify is merely a "firehose" draft, i.e., it includes all tweets in chronological order without comment or classification. Should @UNCE or @Qeyno publish an organized official version, this draft will be removed from the DLL Website.... Storyfies of other #DiversityInTech events are listed in the DLL Archives
