HBCU Stats ... Enrollments and 6-Year Graduation Rates

Last update: Friday 8/15/14 @ 9:38 am
Table 2, at the bottom of this note, presents the enrollments and 6-year graduation rates for the 86 HBCUs that offered bachelors degree programs in the Fall 2012 -- which is the most recent semester for which this IPEDS data is available. The overview presented in Table 1 provides a useful context for reviewing the detailed information presented in Table 2.

Key points to note in Tables 1 and 2 include:
  •  Of the 106 colleges and universities officially designated in 2012 as HBCUs, only 86 offered bachelors degree programs. Eleven (11) HBCUs offered associates degrees, two offered medical degrees, one offered religious degrees, and six (6) were not accredited, so IPEDS does not include any data about them.

  • Although more private HBCUs (46) than public HBCUs (40) offered bachelors programs, 70 percent of the black students were enrolled at public HBCUs, but only 30 percent at private HBCUs ... less than half as many.

  • The last row of Table 1 refers to the 12 HBCUs having the highest 6-year graduation rates for black students. As the reader will see in Table 2 (below), all 12 were private HBCUs

  • However these top level private HBCUs only enrolled 10.4 percent of the HBCU community's black students.

  • The data in Table 2 was extracted from the IPEDS database via its Website on Monday 8/11/14
