This blog was established by the Digital Learning Lab to provide information that supports Black America’s efforts to close the Digital Divide. Its original focus on HBCUs has been broadened to include other colleges, universities, and community-based groups that enhance the computational thinking skills of Black Americans and the networks of successful Black techs who support each others’ efforts to achieve even greater success.

Hackathons for fun and profit

As the reader will see from the short list at the bottom of this page, this is my fourth note about making real world events more accessible to online viewers via Twitter and other social media, and it's my second pass at hackathons. DLL Storify of Black Girls CODE Dallas Chapter: Build a Game in a Day! -- Saturday 3/26/16

The Dallas chapter of Black Girls Code held this workshop at Cedar Valley College. The workshop introduced game design and development, and encouraged student-driven learning, as participants thought analytically, designed, played and coded in real-time. The #HUHACKS Hackathon (6 pm Friday to 6 pm Saturday) is an event coordinated by the Howard University School of Business (Information Systems) and School of Engineering (Computer Science) that is themed the "Startup Ecosystem." DLL Storify of Black Girls Code, Chicago: Build a Mobile App in a Day -- Saturday 3/19/16
The Chicago chapter of Black Girls Code held the latest version of this workshop at the Gwendolyn Brooks College Prepatory Academy. This workshop focused on mobile app development with MIT AppInventor! AppInventor is a fun and simple tool that allows young code divas to create their own mobile apps using drag-and-drop technology.

The Washington, DC chapter of Black Girls Code held the latest version of this workshop at the Capital City Public Charter School. The workshop provided an introduction to game design and development. It encouraged student-driven learning, as participants though analytically, designed, played and coded in real-time. Coding as a catalyst for reorganizing our failing K-12 schools

Last month Melinda Anderson published a short, controversial piece in the Atlantic Monthly, "Will the Push for Coding Lead to ‘Technical Ghettos’?" She quoted a few experts who expressed concerns that the recent proliferation of boot camps and grass roots coding organizations might succeed in teaching disadvantaged students how to code, but fail to teach them the more important underlying skill: computational thinking.

DIV Hackathon is the only youth and diversity-focused annual hackathon that is 100% organized and operated by students of color, in the United States.hackathon is held on the campus of Huston-Tillotson University. Located in East Austin, Huston-Tillotson University is Austin’s oldest university and only HBCU (Historically Black College and University).
